GlossaryRules and Outcomes

DQ

DQ (disqualification) is a result in which a fighter loses the match due to committing an intentional or repeated foul that violates the Unified Rules of MMA. The disqualified fighter officially loses, while the opponent is declared the winner by disqualification. It is the rarest outcome in the UFC.

DQ - UFC/MMA

In the UFC, DQ is an extremely rare result that occurs only under exceptional circumstances. To disqualify a fighter, the referee must determine that the foul was intentional or severe enough to prevent the continuation of the fight. The disqualification is recorded as a loss on the record of the disqualified fighter and as a win for the opponent. Common reasons for disqualification include illegal knees to a grounded opponent, intentional strikes to the back of the head, deliberate 12-6 elbows, and serious unsportsmanlike conduct. DQ is controversial because it changes the title holder without a true victory in the octagon, as seen in some of the most famous cases in recent UFC history. Fighters are trained to know the rules and avoid fouls, making DQ an event that is almost always avoidable.

DQ

At UFC 259, Petr Yan was disqualified against Aljamain Sterling for an illegal knee to a grounded opponent. Sterling won the bantamweight title by DQ, becoming the first champion in modern UFC history to win a title via disqualification.

DQ & Foul

DQ is the most severe consequence of a foul in MMA. While fouls are typically handled with warnings and point deductions, DQ is applied when the foul is intentional, extremely serious, or repeated to the point that it makes continuation of the fight impossible. Foul.
