GlossaryStriking Techniques

Low kick

The low kick is a circular kick aimed at the opponent's thigh, specifically targeting the outer or inner part of the leg. In the UFC, it is a fundamental weapon of Muay Thai that gradually wears down the opponent's mobility, compromising their balance and fighting ability.

Low kick - UFC/MMA

In the UFC, the low kick is executed by rotating the hips and driving the shin into the opponent's thigh. The repeated impact causes progressive pain, swelling, and loss of functionality in the struck leg, limiting footwork, punch power, and the ability to throw kicks. Low kicks are a wear-down weapon: they rarely produce an immediate KO but can render a fighter unable to compete effectively after several rounds. The primary defense is the check, which involves raising the shin to block the kick. Fighters specialized in Muay Thai, such as José Aldo and Edson Barboza, have demonstrated how consistent low kicks can completely change the course of a UFC fight, turning fast opponents into stationary targets.

Low kick

José Aldo was renowned in the UFC for his devastating low kicks. His thigh kicks were so powerful and precise that they caused visible damage from the very first round, compromising his opponents' mobility and forcing them to change their strategy.

Low kick & Calf kick

The low kick and calf kick are both leg kicks but target different areas. The traditional low kick strikes the thigh, while the calf kick aims at the calf. The calf kick is a more recent variant that has become hugely popular in modern UFC for its immediate effectiveness. Calf kick.

FAQ - Low kick

How many low kicks does it take to compromise the leg?

It depends on the power and precision, but generally five to ten well-placed low kicks to the same area can cause significant swelling and seriously limit the opponent's mobility.

How do you defend against a low kick?

The main defense is the check: lifting the shin to block the kick with the hard part of the bone. Footwork and distance are also crucial to avoid being within range of low kicks.
